Why we chose it: A rare and fascinating souvenir from the era of the Second French Empire, this intricately carved pendant houses a tiny Stanhope viewer with an image from the 1867 Paris Exposition — a historic keepsake and conversation starter. A Stanhope viewer is a 19th-century optical novelty that uses a tiny magnifying lens embedded in an object to reveal a microscopic photograph. When held to the eye, a hidden image appears as if by magic — in this case, a snapshot of one of history’s great international exhibitions.
Held on the Champ de Mars beneath what would later become the Eiffel Tower, the 1867 Exposition Universelle was a grand showcase of global innovation, art, and culture. Over 50,000 exhibitors from around the world participated, and it drew more than 9 million visitors — including figures like Tsar Alexander II, Queen Victoria’s son the Prince of Wales, and Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. This pendant captures a piece of that historic moment in miniature form.
