Why we chose it: A rare and beautifully crafted piece by one of the most respected makers of fine writing instruments, this dual-function dip pen and mechanical pencil showcases the innovation and elegance of Sampson Mordan & Co. The intricate machine-turned engraving across the barrel is particularly striking, and the overall condition is superb. A true collector’s piece that blends utility with luxury.

Sampson Mordan & Co was founded in the early 19th century and is best known for inventing the first patented mechanical pencil in 1822, in partnership with engineer John Isaac Hawkins. The firm quickly gained a reputation for producing finely engineered writing instruments, often in precious metals, and remained at the forefront of luxury stationery until the early 20th century.
