1988 Australian Masterpieces in Silver – Bicentenary Four-Coin Proof Set

Why we chose it: A significant piece of Australian numismatic history, this 1988 Masterpieces in Silver Proof Set was released by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate Australia's Bicentenary, marking 200 years since the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788.

This historic release was the very first in the Royal Australian Mint's popular Masterpieces in Silver series, which went on to become an annual celebration of Australian history, culture and coinage.

The collection features four Australian decimal coins, each specially struck in 92.5% sterling silver with a beautiful proof finish.

The collection includes:

• 50 Cent – First Fleet Bicentenary: Featuring a commemorative design celebrating the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788.

• $1 – Bicentenary: Featuring a stylised kangaroo inspired by Aboriginal artwork.

• $2 – Aboriginal Elder: Featuring the distinctive portrait of an Aboriginal elder, commemorating the introduction of Australia's $2 coin in 1988.

• $5 – New Parliament House: Celebrating the opening of Australia's new Parliament House in Canberra during the Bicentenary year.

Each coin features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf and is presented in an individual protective capsule within the original presentation case.

With a limited release of approximately 25,000 sets, this inaugural collection is a wonderful addition to any Australian decimal coin or sterling silver collection.
