1991 Australian Masterpieces in Silver – 25th Anniversary of Decimal Currency Proof Set

Why we chose it: A remarkable piece of Australian numismatic history, this 1991 Masterpieces in Silver Proof Set was released by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Australia's decimal currency, first introduced on 14 February 1966.

This special release forms part of the Royal Australian Mint's popular Masterpieces in Silver series and celebrates the iconic designs of Australia's circulating decimal coins, beautifully recreated in sterling silver.

The collection features eight Australian decimal coins, each specially struck in 92.5% sterling silver with a stunning proof finish.

The collection includes:

• 1 Cent – Feathertail Glider: Featuring Stuart Devlin's iconic feathertail glider design.

• 2 Cent – Frill-necked Lizard: Featuring the distinctive Australian frill-necked lizard.

• 5 Cent – Echidna: Showcasing the well-known Australian echidna.

• 10 Cent – Lyrebird: Featuring the beautifully detailed lyrebird design.

• 20 Cent – Platypus: Depicting the iconic Australian platypus.

• 50 Cent – 25th Anniversary of Decimal Currency: Featuring a commemorative ram's head design celebrating Australia's decimal currency anniversary.

• $1 – Kangaroos: Featuring Stuart Devlin's popular five kangaroos design.

• $2 – Aboriginal Elder: Featuring the distinctive portrait of an Aboriginal elder.

A particularly significant feature of this collection is the inclusion of the first sterling silver proof versions of Australia's smaller circulating denominations, including the 1c and 2c coins, which were withdrawn from circulation in 1992.

The set also includes a sterling silver commemorative ingot featuring the Australian Coat of Arms and an individually numbered serial number.

Each coin is housed in its own protective capsule within the original collector's presentation case.

With a recorded mintage of just 23,951 sets, this collection is a wonderful addition to any Australian decimal coin or sterling silver collection.
