Why we chose it: A rare and enchanting piece of 19th-century Parisian history, this beautifully carved bone pendant holds a tiny Stanhope viewer featuring an image of Notre Dame. It was purchased alongside the other Stanhope pendant currently listed on our site — the example featuring the 1867 Paris Exposition — and is almost certainly from the same era. Very likely bought as a souvenir during the Exposition Universelle of 1867, it captures that remarkable moment in Paris when the city was alive with innovation, culture, and international visitors.
Stanhope pendants were popular keepsakes of the period, using a microscopic lens hidden inside an object to reveal a secret photograph when held to the eye. There’s something truly magical about seeing such an iconic landmark captured in miniature — a pocket-sized window into old Paris.
