Why we chose it: This skull pendant has absolutely stunning detail and presence. Acquired alongside French antique Stanhope viewers also listed on our site, it likely originates from the same time and place — a souvenir from the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris or possibly from the catacombs beneath the city. The Paris Exposition was a grand showcase of art, industry, and international culture, drawing millions of visitors and sparking interest in curiosities and keepsakes that reflected both innovation and history. Alternatively, it may have been sold as a macabre souvenir from the Catacombs of Paris — an underground ossuary housing the remains of over six million people, which became a site of fascination and reflection in the 19th century. As a memento mori, this piece is part of a long-standing artistic tradition meant to remind the wearer of life’s fragility and the inevitability of death — a deeply personal and philosophical object as much as a historical one.
