Why we chose it:
This beautiful Edwardian Mizpah ring, hallmarked Birmingham 1900, captured our attention not just for its lovely detail but for the powerful story it carries. The word Mizpah comes from the Bible (Genesis 31:49) and translates to “The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.” In the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, Mizpah rings were exchanged between lovers, spouses, or family members when distance, war, or travel kept them apart — a deeply romantic promise of love, protection, and reunion.
At the turn of the 20th century, when this ring was made, the British Empire was at its height and separation was common — whether through emigration, military service, or long sea voyages. Jewellery like this became a way to keep someone close even when oceans lay between them. We were drawn to how softly the lettering is formed into the gold band, giving the piece a quiet intimacy that feels just as meaningful today as it did more than a century ago.
