French Antique Stanhope Charm Binoculars – Place Vauban, Likely 1867 Paris Exposition Souvenir

Why we chose it: This carved bone Stanhope binocular pendant charm features a tiny microphotograph of Place Vauban — a distinguished square in Paris located behind Les Invalides. Likely created as a souvenir from the 1867 Exposition Universelle, it was acquired alongside a Paris Exposition Souvenir 1867 - Stanhope Picture Viewer | Antique Carved Bone Fist Pendant, which is listed separately. Though styled as a pair of binoculars, only one side contains a Stanhope lens. These 19th-century novelties offered travellers microphotographic keepsakes of landmarks, cleverly hidden within wearable charms. This piece captures both the elegance of French souvenir craftsmanship and the innovation of early optical technology.

Condition: Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. Only one barrel of the binoculars contains a Stanhope viewer. The micro-image of Place Vauban is visible and very clear. Some light surface wear and natural patina to the bone consistent with age.
